How to use this sangrah

Choose by the hour, the occasion — or the heart

Rajasthani devotional singing has always been practical. A family preparing for Navratri needs songs for the ghat-sthapana and the kanya pujan; a group heading out on padyatra needs songs with a walking rhythm; a grandmother putting a child to sleep needs a soft prabhati or a gentle dhun. That is why this collection is organised by bhav (the mood of the song) and occasion, not alphabetically.

Use the filter buttons to show only one category, or type any word — in Hindi or English — into the search box: try Navratri, chunari, Harsh, भँवरों or jagran. Every card lists a recommended taal. If you are new to taal, Dadra is a six-beat cycle with a lilting, swaying feel, while Keherwa is the familiar eight-beat cycle used in most folk and film bhajans. In each bhajan the line marked टेर (ter) is the refrain, which the whole group repeats after every verse.

The lyrics in this sangrah are devotional compositions written in the traditional style of Shekhawati bhajans for this website. Temple singers and families may know other versions with different words; all are offerings to the same Mother. If your family sings a Jeen Mata bhajan that is not here, please share it with us.

Shant (serene)
Taal
Dadra · 6 beats, slow
Occasion
Dawn · Mangla darshan

Meaning & bhav: A prabhati sung as the temple doors open. The devotee describes dawn breaking over the Aravalli ridge, birds singing and pilgrims crowding Rewasa’s lanes, then asks for one glimpse of the Mother’s sindoor-bright face. The last verse is the heart of the song: a promise to carry her name through the whole working day. Sing it slowly, letting each line breathe, with only a soft harmonium drone.

Jagriti (awakening)
Taal

Meaning & bhav: Here the singer speaks to their own mind: the dark night is over and the red of sunrise is the Mother’s gift. The bhajan gently scolds the mind for sleeping in worldly dreams and urges it to hold on to the one true support. It asks the goddess for three things — wisdom, strength and knowledge. A good bhajan for students and anyone beginning a daily practice.

It announces that the whole congregation will stay awake through the night, lists the instruments — dholak, chang, jhanjh and manjira — and follows the traditional order of a jagran: Ganesh first, then Bhairav, then the Mother’s darbar. The lamp lit at midnight burns till dawn, and the night closes with aarti and prasad. Lead singers often repeat the call-and-response “Bolo Jai Jeen Mata Ki” many times between verses.

Meaning & bhav: The best-known story of Jeen Mata, told as a ballad. Jeevan Bai, born in a Chauhan family, adored her brother Harsh. At the village well she and her sister-in-law agreed that whichever water pot Harsh lifted down first would show whom he loved more. When he lifted his wife’s pot first, Jeevan’s heart broke and she left for the Aravalli hills to do penance. Harsh followed and wept at her feet, but she did not return — she became Jeen Bhawani, and he became Harshnath. Read the full legend on our Katha page.

Meaning & bhav: After leaving home, folk songs say, Jeen sat in penance on a hilltop remembered as Kajal Shikhar. This bhajan pictures her there with no palace or bed — stone for a mattress, the wind singing her lullabies, the moon as her toy. By conquering hunger, thirst and restlessness she awakened divine power in the Aravalli. The lesson for the devotee is patience: whoever remembers her tapasya and holds steady will be carried through any storm.

Meaning & bhav: The most celebrated miracle of Jeen Mata, which gives her the loving title “Bhanwron Wali” — the Mother of the bees. Legend tells that a Mughal army marched on the temple to destroy it, but swarms of bees (bhanwre) poured out and drove the soldiers away. The humbled emperor begged forgiveness and arranged for oil to be offered for the temple’s eternal lamp. The bhajan turns the story into a promise: those who oppose the Mother are defeated, and those who take refuge in her are saved.

Groups usually speed up with each round until the final, joyous “Jeen-Jeen bolo!”.

Meaning & bhav: The farewell bhajan. Leaving the temple, the devotee keeps turning back to look at the door, filling their eyes with her form. They ask forgiveness for any mistakes in worship — “your child is ignorant” — and ask to be called back next Navratri. Until then, they ask her to stay in their home as its support. Traditionally sung softly as the last song of a jagran or at the temple gate.

Jeen Mata in full festival shringar with a green and pink chunari, yellow marigold toran, silver ornaments and a heart-shaped pendant
चुनरी श्रृंगार — जय माँ जीण

The Language of Shringar

Why so many Jeen Mata bhajans describe her adornment

Look closely at the Mother’s darshan on a festival day and you will see a whole vocabulary of devotion: layers of chunari in green, pink and red; a marigold toran across the arch; silver ornaments; a heart-shaped pendant offered by a grateful family. Each of these is a gift brought by a devotee — and almost every gift has a song.

In Rajasthani tradition, describing the goddess’s shringar line by line is itself a form of worship called roop-varnan. As the singer names the crown, the earrings, the nose-ring and the bangles, the listener builds the image of the Mother in their own mind. This is why bhajans like “Chunari Laal Chadhaun Maiya” and “Rewasa Ri Rani” linger on colour and ornament: they are a guided meditation set to music.

Shringar bhajans are also deeply tied to the role of women in Jeen Mata’s worship. Mothers, daughters and new brides offer chunari and the sixteen adornments (solah shringar) and sing together, asking for the wellbeing of their families. When you sing these songs, you join a line of women’s voices that has kept the Mother’s worship alive for generations.
